In an exclusive interview with StarWars.com, the voice actor for all of the Clones in the Filoni animated series STAR WARS: THE CLONES WARS, including Commander Cody, Baker shared his thoughts on CC-2224's return to canon.
Commander Cody disappeared from canon post Order 66. In REVENGE OF THE SITH, Cody is last seen giving the order to shoot down Obi-wan Kenobi on Utapua. The Jedi were identified as traitors to the Republic for trying to overthrow the Republic in rebellion and attempting to assassinate Chancellor Palpatine. In THE CLONE WARS series, Cody's character develops a close bond with his superior officers, the Jedi generals, especially one Obi-wan Kenobi. General Kenobi could trust Cody to follow through with an order or cover his back. The Clones trusted their Jedi generals and the Jedi trusted their Clone counterparts. However, all of the Clone Troopers from the Grand Army of the Republic were preprogrammed with behavioral modification biochips that made it almost impossible to disobey their programming, to turn on the Jedi. Once Order 66 was initiated, all Clone Troopers were driven to open fire on all Jedi. After Order 66 Cody's story stops... left to speculation. But with the third episode of THE BAD BATCH Season 2, titled "The Solitary Clone" which ran for 30 minutes, the fate of Commander Cody is revealed.

Baker talks about the complexity of Cody's decision to go AWOL. He points out that it's fascinating that this beloved Clone could be aligned with Empire during it's early years. That Cody believes the good guys took out the bad guys and that the new Empire is a force for good. That the Clones are here to maintain peace and order in the galaxy. However, Cody confides in fellow Clone, Crosshair, about how Clones are starting to question the legitimacy of Order 66 and leaving the Empire. At this point, Cody is beginning to question the Empire's moral compass, if this is the cause that he signed up for. The episode "The Solitary Clone" becomes a turning point for Cody. When he is given an order to execute the enemy leader after surrender, Cody refuses as it doesn't agree with his moral compass. As a result he leaves the Republic/Empire that he bled for all these years.
It's great that we finally get to see what happens to Cody. I'm in agreement with Baker when he says the fandom will enjoy the compelling and interesting story that season 2 has in store. I hope to implement as much of Cody's canon I can into CHRONICLES OF #37 or at least try to make sense of the continuity of Trooper #37's story as it runs parallel with George Lucas' original trilogy. Korea is only up to episode three but I get the feeling that THE BAD BATCH's story themes are divided into two groups. The first two episodes are more family friendly where as the third is geared more to adults that enjoy complex stories. #37 stated that he enjoyed following Clone Force 99's story more than Crosshairs' story. Maybe the story was too complex or too serious for his liking. Let's see where episode four takes us.
That's it for this installment. I hope you enjoyed today's post. If you want to share your thoughts, please leave a comment and a like. Until next time, may the Force be with you. Always!
