RANDOM QUESTION SUNDAY 024

“Can Thrawn be one of the good guys?”

Hello there! The Corellian Korean here with the twenty-fourth RANDOM QUESTION SUNDAY! And the question is:

Can Thrawn be one of the good guys?

WARNING POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD

FOR THE EXPANDED UNIVERSE MATERIAL

AND PERHAPS FOR FUTURE STAR WARS SHOWS OR MOVIES

THIS IS YOUR LAST CHANCE TO TURN AWAY

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED...

While watching the finale of AHSOKA, my wife, Mrs. CK, posed today's question. As a character, Thrawn's motivations and past is veiled in mystery which is part of his allure. We know just enough to understand that he's a cool high ranking Imperial tactician with a brilliant mind. He is such a likeable character, some want to see him become a good guy like my wife.

She would ask, "Why is Thrawn is working for the Empire? Why isn't he one of the good guys?" I explained that Thrawn is an outsider from an unknown region of space that joined the Imperial navy and attained the military rank of grand admiral. While working for the Empire, he has been gathering information to ascertain if the Empire is a threat to his home world. Also Thrawn hopes to use the might of the Empire to repel a dangerous threat that looms in the not so distant future. Naturally, Mrs. CK asked what that threat was. And I couldn't give her a definitive answer because those threats are not conclusively canon.

In the Expanded Universe, or "Legends", Thrawn was preparing to fend off the Yuuzhan Vong invasion that exists outside of the known galaxy. The Yuuzhan Vong are a humanoid warrior race of aliens that view mechanical technology as blasphemy and worship pain. They engineered their own biological technology like organic weapons and living space vessels. The most interesting trait about the Yuuzhan Vong is their immunity to the Force. Imagine a Jedi not being able to anticipate and block melee or non-melee attacks from the Yuuzhan Vong. Or a Jedi using telekinetic Force blasts that have little to no effect on enemy combatants. These guys were disgustingly overpowered in the Star Wars universe.

Later on the Yuuzhan Vong were retconned into different a alien race known as the Grysk. The Grysk share some similarities to the Yuuzhan Vong, both are waring alien races from unknown space that wield tremendous power. I'm not familiar the Grysk but I believe they are currently canon. They might be retconned and included in later Star Wars content to match THE MANDALORIAN and AHSOKA series. Only time will tell,

If I had to guess the direction Lucasfilms wishes to take the franchise, I believe STAR WARS will have Thrawn prepare for an invasion that is a threat to both the Imperial Remnants and the New Republic. To that end, I can see Thrawn playing a pivotal role as one of the leaders representing the former Imperials to help ward off this encroaching threat. It would be badass to see the Empire and the New Republic combine forces to face this new threat.
