“Who is Huyang?”
Hello there! The Corellian Korean here with the nineteenth RANDOM QUESTION SUNDAY! And the question is:
Who is Huyang?
When the AHSOKA series premieres, we will be introduced to many characters. I'd imagine that the lead creative of AHSOKA, Dave Filoni, will introduce each character in a manner that newcomers can get into the show without prior knowledge of the characters. But knowing more about each character and lore can enrich the viewing experience and enjoyment. Let's take a look at the cast of characters before we get into the meat and potatoes.
Ahsoka Tano (by Rosario Dawson)
A former Jedi apprentice that fought during the Galactic Civil War and was part of the Rebellion against the Galactic Empire. She is in search of a war criminal, Grand Admiral Thrawn.
Hera Syndulla
An ace pilot and a captain of the Ghost crew. She served as a Rebellion cell leader against the Galactic Empire. Now she serves the New Republic.
Sabine Wren

A Mandalorian warrior that fought for the Rebellion against the Galactic Empire. She was also a member of the Ghost crew.
Baylan Skoll (by Ray Stevenson)
A former Jedi with a mysterious past. He is one of the antagonists of the AHSOKA series.
Shin Hati (by Ivanna Sakhno)
The apprentice of Baylan Skoll. She is a proficient pilot and lightsaber duelist. Her past is also shrouded in mystery.
Morgan Elsbeth

A magistrate of the Galactic Empire that was arrested by the New Republic with the aid of Ashoka. She may possess the means to locate Grand Admiral Thrawn.
And finally, this guy. Who is this scholarly robot that appears briefly in the AHSOKA trailers?
Let me introduce Huyang, voiced by David Tennant.
An ancient architect droid that has served the Jedi Order for thousands of generations. This scholarly artisan has guided many Jedi in the construction of their lightsabers. Huyang boasts a vast database of every lightsaber ever built by a Jedi (maybe up until the great purge). Even the nine hundred year old Jedi Master, Yoda, has been under Huyang tutelage.
Here is a clip of Huyang guiding Younglings (Jedi children) in building their first lightsabers.
It is a wonder, how this droid has lasted so many generations with it's memory banks intact. Huyang even survived the rise and fall of the Galactic Empire. Now it has been 30 years since the Jedi Purge. The AHSOKA series runs parallel to the events of the third season of THE MANDALORIAN.
If I had to guess, Ahsoka is partially responsible for Huyang's survival post Order 66 aka the Jedi Purge. Maybe she discovered Huyang and kept the droid hidden for the preservation of the Jedi Order. Or Huyang kept itself hidden for the preservation of the Jedi culture. It's likely that Huyang has a built in protocol to preserve itself in case of emergencies like the eradication of the Jedi Order. If this is true, this may explain how Huyang has survived for so long.
Now that you know as much as I do about Huyang. The next logical question is, "What role does Huyang play in the AHSOKA series?" And "Where has Huyang been all this time?" Maybe we will get the answers to these questions on August 23rd when the AHSOKA series premieres with two episodes. This is where it get's interesting!
