RANDOM QUESTION SUNDAY 015

“Who is Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati?”

Hello there! The Corellian Korean here with the fifteenth RANDOM QUESTION SUNDAY! And the question is:

Who is Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati?

I thought up this question as I rewatched the first AHSOKA trailer with Ray Stevenson and Ivanka Sakhno in it. I pondered the role of Ray Stevenson's character Baylan Skoll and Ivanka Sakhno's character Shin Hati.

POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

for the upcoming AHSOKA series

which airs on August 23rd

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED...

According to Wikipedia, Baylan is a Jedi that survived Jedi purge of Order 66. At the juncture of the AHSOKA series, Baylan is the Jedi master of Shin, a Force adept. The pair harness the Darkside of the Force to antagonize Ahsoka to what end.

Until the series airs in August that is all we know. But if I had to make up my own theories about this pair, this would be my take.

In the Original "Heir to the Empire" Jorus C'Baoth was a Dark Jedi who had no desires for the things beyond his hermitage. Grand Admiral Thrawn finds C'Baoth's secret home and makes a deal with aged Jedi. I believe Baylan Skoll is a version of Jorus C'Baoth. And in the Thrawn Trilogy, C'Baoth was alone and had no apprentice.

If Baylan is a Jedi, he does not necessarily need an apprentice. He is not a Sith that follows the "Rule of Two". According the ways of the Sith, there must be one Sith Master and one Sith apprentice. The role of the master is to teach the apprentice the Darkside ways of the Force, in exchange the pupil will be obedient to the will of the master. On the other hand, it's the role of the apprentice to become strong enough to kill the master then take the former master's place and find his/her own apprentice to restart this never ending vicious cycle. That is the Rule of Two.

I think that Baylan was a Jedi from the Clone Wars era based on his age and attire, not a Sith. His wardrobe resembles that of General Anakin Skywalker who was also a Jedi of that era. He somehow survived Order 66 or he is a "Sparti Clone" that believes he is the original. Sparti Clones are clones that are quickly made with implanted memories of the clone host. The implanted memories will enable the Sparti clones to function immediately without training. However, Sparti Clones have a design flaw, they have a tendency to go mad due to the way their "Flash Memories" were implanted. If Baylan is a Sparti then that might explain why he became a Dark Jedi. Also the original Baylan may have died during Order 66 but was brought back as a Sparti to serve a purpose. What would that purpose be?

During Star Wars Celebration, it was implied that Baylan had a noble quest similar to the noble knights of King Arthur. If we continue this line of thought of Baylan being a Sparti, maybe the original Baylan died during a noble mission. Most Jedi that survived Order 66 thought about restarting the Jedi Order in secret.

Perhaps this was Baylan's final mission. Baylan awakes as a Sparti Clone with only one singular task burned into his mind, to restart the Jedi Order. Thrawn either made Baylan or found him. Then Thrawn makes a business proposition that Baylan cannot refuse. In exchange, Thrawn will gain the services of a powerful Jedi. Having Baylan would serve Thrawn well as he underestimated a Force Adept before, Ezra Bridger, and was defeated. Also the Empire has an obsession of replacing Palpatine and Vader as powerful Forcer users. Baylan's presence would fill that void.

Shin Hati is either Baylan's apprentice from the Clone Wars era that survived Order 66 or a new apprentice that he adopted post Order 66. It would make more sense to assume that Shin is a new apprentice because she looks too young to have survived Order 66 and the Empire. It would be more sensible to age her similar to Ahsoka, unless Shin does not age like a human. It all depends upon timing of the clips from the trailer. If the trailer was showing Shin post a NEW HOPE, then maybe she is a new apprentice or another Sparti Clone. Most Jedi Padawans died with their masters during the great purge. Maybe the original Shin died with her master during Order 66 and was brought back together as a Sparti at a later time. If the clips from the trailer were post NEW HOPE, a Sparti Clone Shin would explain how she has aged slowly.

It would be interesting to see a corrupted Jedi turn to the Darkside due his unstable memories and obsession to restart the Jedi Order. Shin could be one of the Force Adepts that he discovers Shin and adopts her. Maybe Baylan saves Shin from the brink of death and earns her loyalty. They become less like Jedi and do whatever it takes to survive and rebuild. This narrative would align well with what we saw in the trailer and what we know. If indeed Baylan is a version of Jorus C'Baoth, some of this theory crafting may be closer the truth than we know.
