"Obedience Disks and Guardian"

In the last episode, we went over the stats of Trooper 37 and the stats of his experimental R2 Unit Astromech Droid. I justified #37's low stats by introducing his training wheels which comes in the form of his ability and his droid's ability. Let's take a closer look.

First we have the ability "Obedience Disks":

Obedience Disks: If you defeat a non-droid non-unique enemy, they can join your squad in the next skirmish.

This ability will allow #37 to recruit unwilling criminals to support his effort to bring order and stability to the galactic empire. The Obedience Disks are experimental prototype tech from an unspecified R&D department that requires live test subjects. #37 has been entrusted with the task of collecting data by apprehending criminals with this tech. The Obedience Disks are palm sized circular plates made of durable material that latches and fuses onto an individual's body surface like the chest or back. These high precision instruments bend the will of the host to obey the commands of #37. This feat of technological marvel is achieved by creating an untethered neural link between the host of the disk and "command ring" which is installed into the #37' helmet. They in effect become obedient followers to the one that operates the command ring. The scale of this tech resembles that of the Kamino cloning program that made Order 66 possible. However, the real inspiration for their design came from the Planet of Sakaar's slave disks and of course the very practical droid restraining bolts.

With each mission, #37 will capture criminals that will be forced to join #37's team for one skirmish as part of their criminal sentence decreed by the galactic courts of justice. This game mechanic will also introduce #37 to new characters and abilities that may not always be accessible to #37.

Thug Life

In Trooper 37's first mission, he must apprehend 2 wanted criminals for crimes committed against the empire, a Quarren and an Ithorian. They are low tier thugs that work for the Hutt crime syndicate. They are the errand runners that collect protection money from the locals. Recently, they have been reported harassing the local moisture farmers for more taxes.

Quarren Gunman

Cost: 10

Hit Points: 20

Attack: +7

Defense: 13

Damage: 10

Abilities

Cunning Attack: This character gets a +4 bonus to Attack and a +10 bonus to Damage against an enemy who has not activated this round.

Ithorian Henchman

Cost: 5

Hit Points: 20

Attack: +4

Defense: 11

Damage: 10

Abilities

Melee Attack: This character can attack only enemies adjacent to it.

Stealth: If this character has cover, it does not count as the nearest enemy for choosing targets if the attacker is more than 6 squares away. A character can attack an enemy with cover only if that enemy is the nearest. If this character would be the nearest enemy, the next-nearest enemy counts as the nearest instead. Follow the normal rules for cover if the character with Stealth is within 6 squares of the attacker.

Now let's look at the abilities of the Experimental R2 Unit Astromech Droid. It has two training wheel abilities for #37: "Experimental Droid" and "Guardian"

Experimental Droid: Indestructible. Other details are undisclosed.

Guardian: If an enemy targets an ally within 12 squares of this character, you can force that enemy to target this character instead (does not matter if the enemy can choose this character as a target). The attacker can resist this effect with a save of 11. Ignore all obstructions when counting distance.

Along with the Obedience Disks, this droid was also sent by the R&D department.

Story Time

When Trooper #37 completed his training from the imperial academy with the highest marks amongst the graduating cadets of his year, originally, he was to join the 501st regiment. But an unspecified imperial R&D unit were in short supply of highly skilled individuals that were expendable err... fresh faced and willing to serve the Empire. By a twist of fate, #37 was immediate transferred to the R&D department.

From the academy #37 went straight to a remote outpost on the outskirts of Mos Espa, Tatooine. #37 was stationed at what seemed to be a newly installed but vacant single structure. Surrounding the small outpost were automated turrets and a security perimeter to defend from any local raiders. Only one red and white R2 Unit Astromech Droid rolled out on its tripod to meet #37 on arrival. It made a few boops and beeps to greet the bewildered new Stormtrooper. Then the droid extended a data pad to #37 to read. The data pad was from R&D, and it detailed vague instructions for #37's long-term mission at this remote outpost.

MISSION:

1. Apprehend the Quarren and Ithorian. Set blasters to stun. Only use lethal force if necessary.

2. Use the prototype Obedience Disks to detain the criminals.

3. The R2 Unit will accompany you to assist in the apprehension the criminals.

TOP SECRET: The R2 Unit has been repurposed to house an experimental core that will transform the R2 Unit into a sentry of sorts. R&D has designated the core as the "Guardian Core". The Guardian Core has many functions but most of the functions have been disabled due to safety measures and power conservation. Only a few basic functions have been enabled to assist you. One function that is enabled is the multipurpose force shield projector. A highly sophisticated force field projector that can be casted onto multiple targets at once regardless of obstruction or location. For a limited time, this multipurpose force shield will stop all incoming attacks from blaster bolts to projectiles to melee impact. If you are incased in the force field bubble, you can move out of the field but cannot go back in. Fired blaster bolts can exit the force field, but melee combat would be problematic. If the force field is retracted, it will take a few seconds to recharge before it can be reactivated.

Please read the instructions carefully to operate the Obedience Disk and Guardian R2 Unit.
